So here's a quick thought, We like cute animals for the same reasons we like babies. 1- they're small and defenseless and 2- they can't talk, which is the more important reason.
Imagine if cats could talk, man oh man they'd have the most arrogant kind of attitude. and imagine if dogs could talk, they'd be the most annoying creatures ever!
Also we think of babies as mindless objects, that is why we refer to a baby as an "it".
